It has definitely been a while since I've written! I've been traveling and super busy, and I have lots of fun things on the horizon that I want to share!

I'm breaking my bloggy hiatus to announce that there will be a tiny house festival near me this weekend! I'm so excited to be able to attend the NJ Tiny House Festival at the Sussex County Fairgrounds. Presented by United Tiny House, the festival promises workshops, and Guest Speakers, including my personal favorite patron saint of tiny dwellings, Deek Diedricksen. Hopefully I can get my battered copy of "Humble Homes, Simple Shacks" signed by him. A friend of mine is super excited about a composting toilet workshop that they will be attending.

As if I wasn't excited enough about this event, on my way to work this morning, I saw a tiny house on the road, on the way to the fair!

Hope to see you there!Kristin Costahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08243847097013408894noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-456334533485699159.post-42658855949803379662014-08-08T13:37:00.001-07:002017-06-16T07:02:06.895-07:00Most Vital Vacation Ingredient!On the way home from a weekend trip, a friend and I we're listening to a local radio station. They were doing a contest to see who could guess what (according to some survey) was the most important thing to bring on vacation. The survey was said to have interviewed only women. We must have called in at least 20 times, guessing everything we could think of. "Credit cards!", "Food", "Razors!", "Medication!", "Phone Chargers!", and many others. None of them were right. We got home and still waited in the car to hear the answer since we were frustratingly stumped. After another 15 minutes, we finally found out that the answer was "pajamas". This had us mystified, since neither of us thinks that pajamas is nearly as important as the other things we guessed, neither of us really even wear pajamas, especially on vacation.

Even though I started this as a blog that would focus on the tiny house movement, I have been traveling a ton, and still have had no time to build my tiny house. I stay all over: hotels, motels, friends' houses, tents, my car, etc. So I wanted to start a list of some random things that I find important to bring with me on my travels.

I want this to be an ongoing list that can grow and grow, the more I learn about what my traveling needs are, and since I most likely won't think of everything for this post. At the moment I am in a very cheap motel, so some of this list may seem geared toward that.

1. Medication and Vitamins: I take a lot of vitamins, since my eating habits aren't always that great, especially on the road. I pack mine in one of those Monday-Friday dividers that my grandmother used to use, so I don't have to bring countless jars with me.

2. Toiletry bag: even if I only have the clothes on my back, if I have my toiletry bag, I know I can be clean! I even have little dish soaps and laundry detergent in there. Much of it is from leftover complimentary hotel soaps and shampoos.

3. Chargers. Duh. And don't forget your phone either.

4. Food and refillable drink bottles: I travel to perform occasionally, and when I do, I refill my water bottle 2-3 times an hour. (I'm a gymnast at times and a designer/show producer at others) imagine if I had to buy all those water bottles. And imagine the waste left behind if I just threw away each one. Check with the locals about the tap water first, but if it's good, use a refillable bottle.

5. A few Drain plugs: Sometimes I perform many hours of gymnastics and/or have many hours on my feet before returning to a rented room of some kind. Sometimes the fixtures don't work, and I still really want my hot bath! Bleach might be a good idea too, especially if it's a motel with any level of sketchiness.

6. My own towels: This one I just thought about today. First off, if you are a germaphobe, bringing your own towels is a no brainer. I personally am not, however, motel/hotel towels can tend to be super linty. I don't often know the space where I will be performing very well beforehand, and some venues have blacklights. White lint under even the tiniest blacklight can look extremely silly.

7. Umbrella! Another duh. Couldn't hurt to pack a poncho in one of those very compact cases either.

8. Clothes that oppose the weather: going to the beach? Pack a sweatshirt. I've had so many rainy freezing beach days! Ski Lodge? T-shirt. Those fireplaces get hot.

9. Sunscreen.

That's it for now, I think. I'll add to this list again when I think of more things. For now, have a photo of my family dog adventuring through unknown dandelion fields!
Due to fashion week and an innumerable amount of freelance jobs, sleep has been a rarity for me, as well as blogging, and staying in one state for longer than 2 days. Sometimes, I'm in 3 states in one day for work! Thank goodness NY, NJ, CT, and PA are so close!

This is pretty much a placeholder post until I have more substantial things to write about, but hopefully interesting things are in the works! My fiancé and I plan on starting our tiny house this summer, and have been talking about starting a side business that focuses on space efficient home furnishings with multiple uses. I will also be experimenting with new job options for myself to see what types of things are available to people with an up-in-the-air traveling lifestyle like I am used to.

For now here are some photos I've taken of various commutes and job sites I have had to travel to in the past few months, while living out of my backpack!

<div class="separator"style="clear: both;

Since my van died a couple months ago, I am in the predicament of having to choose what my next car should be. Should I go for a short term plan, of getting a tiny gas efficient sedan to save on fuel costs? Or do I want to establish a more long term plan of getting something a little bit more powerful for when I have to haul my studio/house/workspace on wheels?

Though I have a class B commercial driver's license, I still have only a cave-man's knowledge of cars and their individual capabilities. I am by no means a mechanic, and therefore the most advanced knowledge I have concerning this subject matter is that a Jetta most likely not the best choice to haul a 30 foot flatbed with a house built on it.

Since I am an artist, and wish to travel with my studio/shopfront on a fairly regular basis, I feel I need to do more research than those that only haul trailers once a year for vacation, or as a one time house-moving-excursion.

So, dear readers, I would like to introduce you to TOWCAR.INFO. This site is extremely helpful, and allows one to type in all the specs of both their car, and any recent trailer that is on the market, and get an educated overview about the safety, speeds, and feasibility of taking it on the open road. This is really going to help me research and figure out which car to get for my tinyhouse pulling endeavors.

Now, my tiny house is going to be a home built one that I build on a flatbed trailer, (probably around 12-16 feet) but I can always find a caravan that has a similar size and shape, and use that to compare different car models.

To finish this post out, if anyone has any advice for me or other house-hauling newbies, feel free to write it in the comments below!Kristin Costahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08243847097013408894noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-456334533485699159.post-69945025191519327752013-10-03T17:37:00.001-07:002013-10-03T18:08:48.304-07:00Traveling Sushi BarMy fiancé is a permanent traveler: he works all over the country at renaissance fairs. Most fairs last roughly 2 months, so every 2 months he has to pack all his belongings, his tent, and all the equipment he works with, and move to the next job.

The people who work these fairs all year round, moving from show to show call themselves "road rennies" and have a great sense of camaraderie, and a love for the freedom this lifestyle allows.

As I become more immersed in this lifestyle, and observe more fairs from an insider's viewpoint, I get to take part in some of the things that go on in the campgrounds that are reserved for the workers.

Renaissance fairs take place on weekends, and Monday is the equivalent of a Saturday morning to those with weekday jobs. Each Monday, or "Unday", everyone gets together for the Bizarre Bazaar: a flea market reserved only for the people living on the grounds (or in my case, their loved ones). There is always one group of people who sells breakfast and coffee, and lots of people selling things to each other, whether they are handmade items such as jewelry or clothing, or things they are getting rid of, like any other flea market. It is a great occasion for people to relax, and have a good time hanging out with each other.

I have been to many of these bazaars and breakfast/brunch has always been the main event. This time, however, I was happily surprised that the people cooking announced that they would start taking sushi orders, just before noon.

I love Sushi, and I think it was amazing that even in a campsite surrounded by woods in rural Ohio, I could have amazing food made by really cool people. The pictures below show our friends Molly and Shannon at the sushi bar, and some of the delicious things they offered.

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Kristin Costahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08243847097013408894noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-456334533485699159.post-21801174129502525602013-09-26T06:29:00.001-07:002013-09-26T06:29:47.643-07:00TemptationIts just sitting there... Keeping with the mobile shopfront theme, I wanted to talk about Wanderlust Vintage and Handmade. They did a great interview talking about how starting with a mobile shop allowed them to take their time building their business. You can read the interview on DIY Business Association's site.

I am one of those creative types who has so many ideas it seems difficult to decide on only one to execute. When not obsessing over tiny houses and mobile structures I'm focusing on my fashion business, that I have been bootstrapping into action since 2009. (More on that on my business's blog)

Recently, in my attempt to re-evaluate my sense of workspace, I have thought about opening a shop. I've been vending out of tents at festivals for years, but a shop I wouldn't have to set up and break down every weekend? That seems like heaven! and I can make money while simultaneously using the space as a studio.

So I feel as though I'm getting closer to what I eventually need as a business, but there are still so many options! And deciding which one is the least financially tiring is sometimes the key to resourcefulness in my idea manufacturing plant. Brick and mortar shop? Rents can be really high, and I know I'd get stir crazy being in one spot. Renaissance faire vending? Less set up and tear down, since they usually run for 2 months at a clip, but theme restrictions and the niche audience can be stifling to a brand to do all year round. Mobile vending out of a trailer? ...... Now that might make my synapses fire a with a little something extra.

The startup costs would be lower than a brick and mortar, and rather than rent, I'd just have to worry about weekend vendor fees... Indoor events would still be a beast unto themselves, but a trailer studio-shop would give me an easy way to transport my products to different venues, if nothing else...

Here are some amazing examples of other people living the mobile business dream, and looking good doing it!
Here is a video that I feel is a really good example of what my blog is about. Artist Michael Ostaski built an amazing home on wheels for himself, and used it while traveling and making art. Being at home while always moving is a challenge, and he certainly rose to the occasion.
While looking up how much I could make if I sold on of my kidneys, I came across this article about how to pay one's bills while taking to the open road. It is about a girl named Jami Krause who bicycles around the country with her balloon sculpture business, called Balloon Biker.

Having gone to a very expensive college, I am constantly stressed about having enough to get by whilst having adventures, and starting my small business. There are times when it becomes limiting, especially to a fight or flight type person like me, who's biggest personal priority is having the freedom to go where I please. It is difficult to find an occupation in which I can travel, as well as make enough money to pay all of my exorbitant school loans and insurance bills.

I'm constantly searching for success stories about people who can function while traveling the country, especially people who are able to do it with a job that isn't predominantly online. Jami's story is particularly inspiring, because it is creative, and I can apply it to my own starving artist experience.

As a traveling tiny house enthusiast who also tends towards the eccentric side of life, it is no surprise that Vardos are my favorite classic structure. Haven't heard the word "vardo" before? Neither had I until I looked up "gypsy wagons", "gypsy caravans". And then I was hooked.

Vardo is the Romani word for "wooden cart" more specifically referring to those used on the British Isles. They were most popular in the late 1800's. Though many were seen before then, it was more common for tilted carts and tents to be used while traveling. Many vardos are still held onto and restored today, and sadly for me, a locationally challenged lady who would love to go see one up close, almost all of them are in Europe.

Though with the rise of tiny house popularity, these lovely wagons are starting to be used all over the world again. People are building new versions, putting ornamentation that is more personal than traditional on them, and making incredible little homes that double as art pieces.

There are many different types of traditional vardos, dealing with architectural shapes, and wheel placement, and roof types, etc. but I'll save that for another post!

Below are some of my favorite images I've found of wagons, traditional and untraditional. When possible, I'll credit the builders or owners, though some of these photos have been so tossed around tumblr and pinterest that no one can be quite sure anymore. If you are reading this, and know any info about these photos, let me know, and I'll write it in!

I often vend and camp at festivals, and have saved this photo because it is a perfect example of how to combine vending space and living space. Awnings are wonderful! And it allows a vendor to sleep and spend off time near their shops, just in case one is vending in a new or more untrustworthy area.

I like the clever use of trims on this one. Its a great alternative for those who don't like to do intricate painting work, but still want a decorative element.

Anyway, I have TONS more photos on this and other little house subject matter, so rather than post them all in one go, I'll save some for later!Kristin Costahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08243847097013408894noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-456334533485699159.post-2262534326497626232013-07-24T15:27:00.004-07:002013-07-24T15:27:41.541-07:00Computers vs. Phones

So I am one of those people who loves tiny, sustainable living. I'm as low maintenance as a person can get, without forsaking certain needs. This can open a discussion about which needs are most important to hang onto when shifting into a lifestyle of having less.

For instance, For the past two weeks I was without my laptop computer. Though I have a smartphone, and one would think I'd be able to keep up with everything I normally do, I just didn't.

There are a few reasons for this.
1. All my photos and references are on my computer, and I still haven't synched my phone up to it. I didn't want to write blog posts or emails without being able to include everything.

2. Things tend to load a lot slower on my phone. I'm impatient, and only use my phone to look things up in desperate cases, and nothing really seemed desperate enough to merit me keeping up with it.

3. I'll be honest, I hate reading off of the damned tiny screen. (I will be doing many posts in the future about my immense love for books, and how it proposes a problem for a tiny house enthusiast. Especially when my perfect book storage scenario is equivalent to the scene in Disney's Beauty and the Beast when he gives her his ginormous library as a present. With ladders. So many books, that ladders are necessary... sigh...) So switching even to a Kindle or Nook is out of the question.

4. Many times, the mobile version of sites I usually frequent are still buggy. The Tumblr app won't even work on my phone. And I just don't have the energy to try out Pinterest, especially when it is a site geared towards visual stimulus. Instagram takes forever, and I refuse to get into Vine, because I already get annoyed when gifs on Tumblr slow everything down.

5. The biggest problem about not having my computer is that the cell signal and internet in my house is awful. To explain how inconvenient it is, I will include an aptly drawn diagram below. I also often travel to places that don't have internet, and when they do, everyone within a mile radius is busy illegally downloading every season of Mash or the Simpsons, or whatever. Which again, makes it very slow to load anything. At least when I have my computer, I can write everything out, gather all of my other media to be emailed or blogged, and even if the internet speed is slow, it is already saved on my computer.
My cell service is confined to my driveway, and my across-the-street neighbor's yard.

In the last few weeks my phone has lost vendor applications, blog posts, and email drafts as if it was its job. Even though there are ways to counteract all these gripes, I find that I just don't care enough about using my tiny phone as a computer to make the effort. I have a good friend who hasn't owned a computer since she got her iphone, and is completely happy with it. But personally, I'd rather just wait for my laptop to be returned.

So what do you think? I'd love to have a discussion on people's thoughts about comfort levels of different media tools, like tablets, smartphones, and computers.

While you think about that, I'll be in my neighbor's yard, saving this blog post as a draft 4 times.Kristin Costahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08243847097013408894noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-456334533485699159.post-89224967402084430292013-06-28T07:48:00.001-07:002013-06-28T07:48:25.237-07:00My Tinyhouse Wanderlust.

My Tiny House obsession started a few years ago while I was reading a book about monsters in the bathtub. I got to a chapter on werewolves, and the book showed that they lived in gypsy wagons (which I promptly found out are called Vardos). They were full of human clothes, and all the provisions to make a life on the run from angry townspeople as comfortable as possible. It was one of those moments, where something clicked deep down, and afterwards I knew what kind of lifestyle and dwelling I was destined for.

Not that I am constantly on the run from angry townspeople, but I am definitely the type of person that becomes uneasy if I am in the same place for over a month and a half. There are a few ways I've dealt with this: holding jobs with a 2+ hour commute, freelancing all over the east coast, making excuses to travel for work.

Let me back up. I'm a painter/wearable artist/ fashion designer, and my first professional work out of college was in a costume studio, working on films, fashion shows, ballets, window displays, etc. And the big projects would often last around a month and a half to two months, and then we'd move on to a completely different project. The act of switching gears every couple months never left me.

It is said that people who have ever worked in film and theater are nomads, and though my professional path might not always be in that arena, I am constantly in the process of exploring my identity as an artist and a wanderer.

I'm starting this blog to appease my obsession with tiny houses, and to explore aspects of a traveling lifestyle. I find that many tiny house websites focus purely on tiny houses, and the challenges/benefits of living small, but the nomadic lifestyle struggles are only touched on briefly. I feel that in this age where the home office can fit in one's pocket, there will be a greater community of those who are less stressed on the move than at rest.

And luckily I have the Blogger App on my phone. So I can share my discoveries with you no matter where I am.Kristin Costahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08243847097013408894noreply@blogger.com1
